Our region’s boundaries
New Zealand's Waikato region stretches from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula and Pukekohe in the north, to the slopes of Mount Ruapehu in the south. Our boundaries have been drawn based on water catchment areas.
The Waikato region contains eight local authority districts, one city and parts of three other districts. Find out where the local authority boundaries are and how to contact them on our map below.
In 2006, 382,716 people lived in the Waikato region – about three quarters of them in urban areas1. Our region contains:
- the longest river in New Zealand (the Waikato River)
- the largest lake (Lake Taupo)
- internationally significant wetlands
- the country’s most important geothermal systems
- extensive native and exotic forests, and
- Tongariro National Park.
Check out our maps of our region's East and West Coast marine areas to see where our region's boundary extends offshore.
