Regional waste management strategy

Environment Waikato's Long-Term Council Community Plan sets aside funding over a 10-year period to invest in achieving waste minimisation in the Region. The Waste Strategy shows how this money will be spent.

The question is:

“If we are serious about minimising waste generation in the Region, what is the most important thing that Environment Waikato can do?”

The Regional Waste Management Strategy, prepared by a team of people from local authorities and the waste industry, sets out how Environment Waikato will contribute to solving the 'waste problem' by:

  • showing by example that it is possible to integrate waste minimisation and energy efficiency into day to day business operations
  • co-ordinating information collection across the Region so that decision-makers can make informed decisions on waste management options
  • advocating for the introduction of economic incentives for waste minimisation both locally and nationally
  • ensuring that the regulation of waste disposal and resource recovery sectors doesn't create barriers to waste minimisation
  • co-ordinating waste minimisation programmes (such as education or special waste collections) across the Region to reduce duplication and cost to the ratepayer.
