Review of the Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy

Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy Review - Health Impact Assessment Appraisal Report

A health impact assessment (HIA) was undertaken by Environment Waikato as part of the Waikato Regional land Transport Strategy review that commenced in 2009. The HIA was intended to identify some of the potential direct and indirect impacts (positive and negative) of the proposed strategic direction of the strategy on public health and wellbeing. The Waikato Regional Transport Committee agreed in 2009 to undertake a HIA and his occurred between September 2009 and March 2010. It was led by Environment Waikato in partnership with Waikato DHB Population Health and with the support of community and organisation representatives from across the Waikato region.

Feedback on the review document

We're received your views on the Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy Review 2011-2017 document. Submissions are now closed.

In total 11 organisations submitted feedback on the discussion document - below are the Submissions and Staff Recommendations Report and the Addendum of the proposed amendments to the Discussion Document that were present to the Regional Transport Committee (RTC) at their meeting on 8 February 2010.

After considering the submissions the RTC endorsed in principle the high level priority challenges to take forward to the next stage of the RLTS review.  These are:

  • Managing the high growth in inter-regional freight movements.
  • Population and employment growth in the Future Proof sub-region.
  • Optimising the opportunities presented by the Waikato Expressway.
  • Addressing poor road safety record.
  • Improving access to services for rural communities.
  • Improving accessible journeys in urban areas.
  • Energy efficiency and security of supply.
  • Continuing to improve land use and transport integration.
  • Funding security over the life of the strategy

The next step is to take the revised outcomes and challenges and discussions from the RLTS Regional Advisory Group (RAG) to the RTC workshop in Taupo on March 1 2010.  The RTC will be asked to endorse the preferred strategic direction of the RLTS at this workshop.
