Appendix 4:
Criteria for Determining Significance of Cultural Heritage Resources
- The significance of cultural heritage resources in the Region shall be determined using criteria including the following:
- the extent to which the place reflects important or representative aspects of Waikato or New Zealand history;
- the association of the place with the events, persons, or ideas of importance in Waikato or New Zealand history;
- the potential of the place to provide knowledge of Waikato or New Zealand history;
- the importance of the place to tangata whenua;
- the community association with, or public esteem for, the place;
- the potential of the place for public education;
- the technical accomplishment or value, or design of the place;
- the symbolic or commemorative value of the place;
- the importance of historic places which date from periods of early settlement in Waikato;
- rare types of historic place;
- the extent to which the place forms part of a wider historical and cultural complex or historical and cultural landscape; or
- the integrity and state of preservation.
