3  Significant Resource Management Issues, Objectives, Policies and Methods

3.4  Water

3.4.1 Overview

This section describes the fresh water resources of the Region, and sets out the significant resource management issues arising from the use, development and protection of those resources. The fresh water resources of the Region are extensive (see Map 4), and used for a wide range of industrial, agricultural, domestic and commercial purposes. Water resources also have:

  1. spiritual significance to Maori
  2. ecological, aesthetic, scientific and educational value
  3. importance for tourism and recreation.

Demand for water is likely to increase in the future, in response to population and industrial growth in different parts of the Region, and as a result of increasing production and processing in the primary sector.

Public access to waterways is a matter of national importance. However, there are locations and circumstances where access is not appropriate such as for public safety, natural hazards or for conservation purposes.
