Tangata whenua
Environment Waikato is entering an exciting era in resource management. The effect of climate change is encouraging us to reaffirm our responsibility to the natural environment, whilst seeking solutions through the longstanding associations that have been developed with our iwi partners over the years. Environment Waikato is exploring innovative ways to strengthen these relationships with iwi and Māori groups, both within and outside of the co-management agreements. We welcome you to join us on this journey.

Tai-ranga-whenua
“Weave the land and the sea”.
In a social context the meaning reflects the role of the iwi unit, to foster partnerships between Māori and council by weaving together values, principles and goals so that our environment is enhanced for all, now and in the future. The development of Tai-ranga-whenua, is a critical step towards building meaningful and working relationships across the organisation with iwi Māori and tāngata whenua throughout the region and strengthening Māori representation in council decision making.
